Grandma’s Apron
The principal use of Grandma's apron was to protect the dress underneath, because she only had a few.
It was easier to wash aprons than dresses and they used less material. It also served as a potholder for removing hot pans from the oven.
It was wonderful for drying children's tears, and on occasion was even used for cleaning dirty ears.
From the chicken coop, the apron was used for carrying eggs, fussy chicks, and sometimes half-hatched eggs to be finished in the warming oven.
Those aprons were ideal hiding places for shy kids when company arrived.
And when the weather was cold, Grandma wrapped it around her arms.
Those big old aprons wiped many a perspiring brow, bent over the hot wood stove. Chips and kindling wood were brought into the kitchen in that apron.
From the garden, it carried all sorts of vegetables. After the peas had been shelled, it carried out the hulls.
When unexpected company drove up the road, it was surprising how much furniture that old apron could dust in a matter of seconds.
When Grandma went out the door and waved her apron, the men knew that dinner was ready for them.
It will be a long time before someone invents something that will replace that
'old-time apron' that served so many purposes.
Have a very vintagey day.

Can't wait to see your new aprons!
We didn't meet our Grandmas and Mom never wore an apron, (but she always had earrings on!)but we love aprons anyway...we even wear them ourselves. Yours are all beautiful, even if they are a little wrinkled!!
...by the way, are we supposed to iron ours? because we certainly don't!
Love you, Berries!!!
Love this story! And i love the orange polka dot apron so cute! ;)
This story conjures up memories of my grandmothers and aunts who wore aprons. Such a sweet way of telling about the many uses of such a wonderful and basic accessory.

Wonderful post. Aprons do hold a special charm. I love the story to go with your pictures. I'll stop by the shop and have a look at your new aprons...can't wait!
Have a great VTT!
Aprons sure had a lot of uses.
Yup, Grandma's apron (she lived next door) dried tears when Mom punished us. We'd run next door for comfort!
You have a beautiful collection!
What a delightful post! Brought back some childhood memories that are very treasured!!
Hope your day is full of sunshiney blessings!!

I love old aprons and I wear one when I cook. Great post:)
My mother sent me an email of that. She knew I would love it because she knows how much I love aprons.

Love your post - in your description I can see my Grandma and my mom both in their aprons. My Grandma used to make all the "girls" a new apron for Christmas - after she was gone my Mom carried on the tradition. Now that my Mom is gone - I haven't carried on! :(
Great story. Love these aprons. Thanks for stopping by.
I love that description :)

What a heart warming post today! Almost made me cry! Thanks so much!
Your post brought back a lot of memories. I am well aware of those times. Also, the story behind the aprons you shared is true.
Chas,
I remember my grandma doing so many of those things. One of my first memories of my grandma is "helping" her wash dishes with her half apron tied up under my arms. I love this sweet post. So glad you did it. Love you! xoxo

What a wonderful story of the good old apron! And I bet when they could no longer be worn, the fabric was cut up and used in a quilt!
Love it and the aprons! You have such fun things to visit!
Hugs, Lisa

My mother and grandmothers always wore aprons. Sweet memories are why I love aprons so much.
Happy VTT and have a wonderful weekend.
Love that! I could just picture grandmas everywhere back in the day doing each thing listed. I'm going to check out yours now, but I can already guess that they are adorable!

Great post about Grandma's apron :-)
Love this! It reminds me so much of my dear grandmother, Granny. She not only loved aprons, she made them for other people. My MIL has several that she cherishes.
Love to you!
XO,
Sheila :-)
I LOVE this post! I'm such an old fashioned girl at heart! Now I want to call my grandma and see if I can have one of her aprons!
Love the blue one with chicken scratch!
I am going to write this one out, and post it on my board by where my aprons hangs. I have always loved aprons because I can see Grandma wearing hers. Yes she wiped many a tear from this little girls face. I can still see her carrying the eggs from the hen house in her apron pockets, and even the cherries when we picked them from the tree. Isn't it amazing what one little post can help a person remember. Thanks for the memories today. Great post. Please stop by and say hi. Country Hugs, Sherry
Loved all the aprons! And the story about grandma's apron was great.
Who knew there's a lot more functions an apron serves? :-) I enjoyed reading it. It's both sweet and a little funny.
You know a couple of years ago, I looked desperately for an apron. I couldn't find one! I am so glad that they have made a comeback! They do mean more than just a peice of cloth. Thanks for the story & the pictures
they are all so cute!
