The Mourning of the Shrew

....
..This is a true story based on events which occurred
at our home last evening.

I wish I could say that no animals were injured
in the making of this story.

But alas.........

{you may need to grab a tissue}

The girls and I were upstairs getting ready for church last night when Hubby/Daddy began calling our names....

Girls~~come here~~~I've got something to show you.

They pulled their shoes on in a flurry and ran down to see what the excitement was about

Momma~~it's a shrew~~Come and see!

So I pulled on my boots in a flurry and ran down to find a teeny tiny shrew running laps in an old cement bucket.

Hubby had found the little critter in the basement and snatched him up for our entertainment...plus who wants a rodent running around in the basement.

Now some of you may be thinking {ick!}

but I'm here to tell you that he really was adorable....a little grey puffball with the tiniest squeek to his voice.

You know what comes next~~~~

Can we keep him Mom~~~please?!

Ok....for a few days....

now get him a little piece of cloth..... and a little dish for water.

I will put in a little bit of dogfood and see if he will eat that.

We quickly got a home made in the old bucket and zoomed off for church.

{intermission}
******************

I completely forgot about the little fella until we were almost home and the girls began talking about what his name was and how they told their little friends at church all about the new pet.

I put in my two cents
~Pom Pom should be his name~

no Mom.
it's Truman

Spunky runs into the classroom to see him and I suddenly hear sobbing.

Loud sobbing.

She comes out and hides her tear-drenched face in my leg.

Oh, Baby.....did Truman die?

Uh~huh.

{lots more sobbing.....now joined in by Twinkletoes}

I wanted him to live! cries Spunky.

I did too Sweetie.
He was a good little shrew.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
now, I'm trying not to smile....
after all,
we only knew the little guy for about 5 minutes.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

but it was sad
he was a good little shrew.

So now....
this morning

they are preparing for his little shrew funeral.

A craft stick headstone has been made.
The trowel is ready.

Goodbye dear Truman.

You will be missed.

***************************************

Here is what the autopsy report stated:

Little shrew injested bits of cement after licking his paws
and his intestines were solid as a brick wall.

We are so sorry Truman.

~On another note~

I'm off to bury a critter.

I just came across your button from my mom's blog that said please pray for Shauna. I am so heavy hearted that I didn't see this button sooner. I have recently lost a cousin to Cancer less than a month ago, (Amy) this was an extremely tough battle we never would've gotten through with out prayers and our Lord. I do not have money, but I do have the word of God, and I will pray for dear Shauna, I looked further down past this post, she is truly a beautiful woman. God bless her and your family as you go through this battle. You do not stand alone, Jesus is there beside you. He will lift you and guide you.

I am so sorry to hear about the Shrew he was pretty cute ;0)
I have never seen one, I will be thinking of the little ones as they proceed with the funeral for the shrew this morning. Children are funny little things, but death at certain ages will spark something inside them, they do understand, and its sad that they had to get attatched even if for only 5 minutes to the little guy.

God bless

I will add Shauna to my prayer list, my prayer list is on my family page of my blog if you get a chance to stop over.

I think Pom~Pom was an excellent name for a good shrew. Kids become attached so quickly. Sad the cement appetizer got him. I mixed quick-rite with dog food for the skunk problem this summer and they lapped it up and begged for more. They must have a heckofa' digestive system.

I loved your little shrew story and the girls are just precious. Have a fantastic day enjoying the love that surrounds you!!!

Girls...We're so sorry about your little Truman. I think that was a positively exquisite name (since that is MU's mascot), he was adorable! Enjoy the sunshine today!

I don't like rodents, but I am truly sorry the little one's were upset by his death. Pom Pom would have been a better name...I am with you on that one.
Blessings, andrea

Truman had a great home with you family, even if for a short period of time. Poor little shrew!

So glad he was able to get a proper burial!

Still praying for Shauna....

Just one word (or 2) for little Truman: Pepto Bismol! Sorry...couldn't resist...I know, I'm a mean, mean person!!!!! Feel sorry for the girls though, kids really get attached to cute little creatures. I've never seen a shrew in person, they are cute! Many hugs,
Marcela

Congrats on the award!
Found the Pray for Shauna button and Praying we have done! I am a cancer survivor going on 4 yrs! Such scary stuff to go through, but being positive is so important - even though you are afraid! My mantra each day now is "Strength, courage and HOPE, baby. . every day ~ HOPE because without out it, we have nothing" Sending prayers and lots of good karma your family's way!

Oh, I'm so sorry about your little shrew. I hope the funeral goes well and that the girls are okay. He really was a cutie. Funny that they should name him Truman. I would have like Pom Pom, too, not that Truman isn't a perfectly good shrew name.

Sending you much love across the miles and rejoicing that I finally got back online! YEA!

XO,

Sheila :-)
